Dear Mr Madigan, We’ve never met nor spoken to each other, and I’m afraid I wouldn’t recognise you if we crossed each other in the street. But I’ve just had a letter from you, and I feel obliged to reply publicly.

I assume it was us you intended to write to. The envelope was addressed to Mr and Mrs Finlay (a bit old-fashioned, I thought) at our address, and it begins “Dear Family member/Guardian”. That was as personal as you managed to get, and you didn’t even manage to sign your name yourself.
